What those black streaks really are
The stains are Gloeocapsa magma, a blue-green algae that drifts in on the wind and settles on roofs all over Florida. It shows up worst on the north-facing slopes, the sides that get the least sun and stay damp the longest. On asphalt shingles it feeds on the limestone filler baked into the shingle, which is why badly streaked roofs also start shedding granules. On tile and metal it holds moisture against the surface and stains it dark.
